Daniel Alvizo week 9 Mind over Matter

The most powerful weapon you can possess is your own mind. It is essentially the most powerful supercomputer in existence. Don’t believe me? Well sure we can’t run complex math equations instantaneously (that would be extremely helpful), but think about this: Our brain runs hundreds of background programs that keep us alive like breathing, works regardless of cell service or wifi, and most incredible of all, it never lags. Our mind has evolved over thousands of years to develop creativity, emotion, and empathy. We have developed language, science, theology, all thanks to our minds. All that, and not even including our memories which take the equivalent of around 2 million gigabytes of storage. We have the capability to learn from our mistakes and improve upon the past. All this thanks to the incredible power of the human brain. Despite literally not being able to live without it, we still know relatively little about how the brain works. Why were we, of all the species on the planet given this gift of knowledge and creativity? We may never know. We can thank our brains for giving us the ability to think about such abstract ideas as well. The mind is truly a remarkable thing. It’s our job to use it. After all, the mind is a terrible thing to waste. All of this proving the brain’s power, and yet it still takes forever to come up with an idea for blogger. I mean seriously, it takes longer to come up with an idea than to write the blog.

  1. Hi Daniel,
The last line of your blog made me laugh. It takes me longer to conjure up an idea than actually write the blog. I think a lot of the things that the brain does are automatic, which is it is more strenuous a task to try to do something. Fo example, we do not have to tell our brains to help us breath, we just do it. However, it would somehow feel more difficult to breathe if we carefully focused on the pattern of it. A lot of the information in your blog relates back to what we are learning in psychology class. I find it very interesting.

  2. Hi Daniel, I completely relate with you when you say that you spend less time writing the blog rather than thinking of the topic! I swear, I feel like I never have any original experiences. Besides that, it's also amazing to me as to how powerful our minds are. Sure, some things are more difficult than or take longer than other things, but the fact that we are the most intelligent mammals on Earth is mind-blowing, if you really think about how many mammals there are! Sometimes, I find myself "thanking" my brain in a way whenever I come up with a super clever idea when working in a group, or when I finally remember how to do a problem correctly on a test.

  3. I have seen the supercomputer-brain analogy mentioned before in my psychology textbook and it makes a lot of sense. I believe the human mind is what made our species so successful in literally taking over the world. Our minds enable us to work together and adapt to a variety of challenges, social situations, and climates. No other species has the ability to do this to the extent humans can. You would think that with this great gift bestowed upon us we would use it to its fullest potential, but that is unfortunately not always the case.

  4. Hi Daniel, I read your blog, and I found your topic on the power of the brain to be very interesting. The human brain is very complex; it is unlike a computer, which runs commands, as it considers the moral as well as the intellectual decisions of everyday life. Our brain is what allows us to be creative and carry out our goals. The power in which our brain holds upon us is evident if we imagine life without the functionality of the brain; we would not be able to make rational decisions without the help of other, and we would not be able to express our thoughts freely.

  5. Hi Daniel, I really liked your blog on the power of the human brain. It is really interesting that one of the most complicated things in this universe is our own brain. It does many things simultaneously in the background that are essential for keeping us alive and functioning properly. I also liked the idea that you brought up that the brain is amazing and interesting in many ways but it still takes a lot longer to think of what to write for our biweekly posts than to write the post itself.

  6. Hi Daniel, sometimes I will notice myself thinking about what our brain can do at once. Last year, I built PCs, and I learned everything that computers have to do. It is crazy how people can do a lot more functions than a pc and still do more and more without needing a break. For example, our laptops and computers will overheat or run out of battery before we will. Also, it is interesting how our body can also regenerate itself.

  7. Hi Daniel, I've often been told that the brain is one of our most powerful tools, but your post really put things into perspective. 2 million gigabytes of "memory storage" is an absolutely insane number to think about. Sometimes, when we aren't getting the results we expect to achieve, it can be easy to forget the amazing feats our brains achieve on a daily basis. Your post is a great reminder that the brain truly is a fearsome weapon.

  8. Hey Daniel, I agree that the brain is a very powerful thing and it does have a lot of different functions. I have found interest in the brain and the functions it controls for the body because of like you said "The most powerful weapon you can possess is your own mind" and it is an important thing to know about because it dictates all the systems in ones body and it is easily the most powerful thing in creation because it is the stem of all creativity.
